AMA BEGINS DATA COLLECTION ON CHURCHES AND MOSQUES

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah the purpose of the exercise was to enable the assembly to hold itself in readiness to enforce the guidelines as well as assist in conducting contact-tracing should there be any confirmed COVID-19 case within any church.

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has begun collecting data on religious bodies within its jurisdiction.


The data which will identify the number of churches and mosques within the metropolis captures details of the number of members, location, contact persons, among others.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Gilbert Nii Ankrah the purpose of the exercise was to enable the assembly to hold itself in readiness to enforce the guidelines as well as assist in conducting contact-tracing should there be any confirmed COVID-19 case within any church.


According to the statement Environmental Health, as well as Social welfare Officers and Building Inspectors from the assembly, would be visiting the communities to collect data on all places of worship so as to locate them and reach out. 


The statement also urged all religious leaders to visit any of the assembly's sub metros to provide the needed details. 


President Akufo-Addo on Sunday, May 31, 2020, announced the easing of some COVID-19 induced restrictions which include the lifting of the ban on religious gatherings and some public events but with enhanced safety measures.


Per the guidelines for the easing of the restrictions, religious gatherings, a maximum number of 100 congregants, and the one-hour time limit was allowed for any religious activity.
