GHANA’S AMBASSADOR TO CHINA, H.E. EDWARD BOATENG

The ambassador of Ghana to China H.E. Edward Akwasi Boateng had again summoned leaders of the various Ghanaian Communities in China on the 2nd of February, 2020 to receive updates and to charge them to execute a number of contingency plans intended to safeguard Ghanaians across China.

Briefing the meeting, Dr. Percy David Papa Akuetteh, a PhD student in hepatopancreatobiliary surgery at the Wenzhou Medical University and President of the Wenzhou chapter confirmed that, the infected number of people were 265 as at the time of the meeting, making the city the most affected outside Hubei Province and as such, local authorities were intensifying measures to keep the increasing number of cases in check.

THE WORKERS WERE COMMENDED FOR COMING TOGETHER AS A UNIT TO PUSH THEIR CONCERNS THROUGH. HOWEVER, THEY WERE ASKED TO JOIN ANY GHANA COMMUNITY CLOSEST TO THEM, AS THE EMBASSY HAS ALREADY MADE PROVISION FOR ALL GHANAIANS WHO ARE NOT STUDENTS AND HENCE DIDN’T STAND A CHANCE TO SHARE IN THE PACKAGE THAT WAS DISHED OUT TO STUDENTS SOME DAYS AGO.

Dr. Percy also reported that the city is under partial lockdown as a result of the increasing number of confirmed cases, and the two major university campuses Wenzhou Medical University and Wenzhou University, responded accordingly and have locked down their dormitories. ‘The city’s transportation system has also been halted until further notice,’ he added.

The eloquent doctor assured the ambassador that plans were underway to reach out to Ghanaians in Lishui and several other counties around Wenzhou. Dr. Percy concluded with a call on Ambassador Edward Boateng to hasten the approval of the contingency plans so as to meet the reach Wenzhou sooner than later.

Leaders of the sister communities also gave updates concerning the spread and management of the Wuhan coronavirus, officially 2019-nCoV in their respective communities. They together assured the ambassador that a sound message was in circulation to get all Ghanaians who may not be members of any community to quickly join and be catered for.

H.E. Edward Boateng thanked and assured the leaders that a sum of 20,000 yuan will be made available to help them procure nose masks, hand sanitizers and other medical and basic supplies for their communities, members by merit, with immediate assistance to Wenzhou following its lockdown status.

In a related development, another meeting was held yesterday, February 3rd, 2020 between some NEC members of the Ghanaian Communities and a group of Ghanaian workers in China who came together as a group to solicit for aid from the embassy in the wake of the intervention dished out to Ghanaian students in China through NUGS. The meeting was chaired by by the national president of the Ghanaian Communities Association, Mr. Peter Whajah and Dr. Percy D.P. Akuetteh.

The workers were commended for coming together as a unit to push their concerns through. However, they were asked to join any Ghana Community closest to them, as the embassy has already made provision for all Ghanaians who are not students and hence didn’t stand a chance to share in the package that was dished out to students some days ago.

Many such meetings and engagements are expected in the coming days to provide updates and to ensure that Ghanaians across the Peoples Republic of China are properly catered for during these trying times.
