EDUCATION MINISTER, DR. MATTHEW OPOKU PREMPEH

Director of special duties at the Forestry Commission, Charles Owusu, has accused Education Minister, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh affectionately called NAPO of collapsing the NPP's flagship Free Senior High School policy.

He says the free SHS policy though good is being poorly implemented, adding that it is riddled with problems that need urgent attention.

Speaking on Okay FM’s 'Ade Akye Abia' program, he explained that the challenges facing the free SHS policy are gradually crippling the policy and making it unpopular.

THE FREE SHS (FREE SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL) POLICY IS A GOVERNMENT OF GHANA INITIATIVE INTRODUCED BY PRESIDENT NANA AKUFO-ADDO'S ADMINISTRATION IN SEPTEMBER 2017. THE POLICY HAD BEEN A MAJOR CAMPAIGN POLICY PRIOR TO THE ELECTION OF PRESIDENT AKUFO-ADDO IN 2016.

He has therefore asked for the resignation of the Education Minister or be sacked by President Nana Addo Dankwah Akufo-Addo.

He could not fathom why some students are still in the house whereas they are supposed to be in school under the gold track of the free SHS policy.

"My own daughter even attempted suicide because of this free SHS policy. Ghanaians are disappointed in this government because of this free SHS policy implementation," he said.

He has warned the government not to be deceived about the good things he hears about the policy because Ghanaians are not happy.

The Free SHS (Free Senior High School) policy is a Government of Ghana initiative introduced by President Nana Akufo-Addo's administration in September 2017.

The policy had been a major campaign policy prior to the election of President Akufo-Addo in 2016.

In 2018, His Excellency Nana Akufo-Addo and his team of governance introduced another initiative as part of the Free SHS Education Policy which is the Double Track System.

The Double Track System was introduced by the government in order to enable various Senior High Schools in Ghana to take in more students and ensure that all Ghanaian students have access to a Senior High School education.

The Double Track System is in two sessions, thus The Green Track and The Gold Track.

The Green Track represents the first batch of students who would go to school for a semester and are later followed by the Gold Track students who would continue after students of the green track session have vacated on the academic calendar.
