SIX JOBLESS NURSES ARRESTED FOR PICKETING

• THE ARREST OF OUR MEMBERS IS AN ILLEGAL ACT AND AN AFFRONT TO THE RIGHTS AND FREEDOM OF THE INNOCENT UNEMPLOYED NURSES.

The leadership of the Coalition of Unemployed Nurses (CUN) has said six members of the group have been arrested by the Police for picketing the Ministry of Health to demand that they are employed.

A statement dated 21 October 2019 and signed by Mr Paul Selorm, the Convener of the group, said: “We are saddened to announce the arrest of our members who were at the premises of the Ministry of Health to lawfully demand employment.

“WE ARE, BY THIS RELEASE, CALLING ON THE GHANA POLICE SERVICE AND THE MINISTER IN CHARGE OF NATIONAL SECURITY TO RELEASE OUR MEMBERS WITH IMMEDIATE EFFECT OR FACE THE WRATH OF THE UNEMPLOYED NURSES ACROSS THE COUNTRY.

“We can confirm that the Ghana Police Service has arrested six members of the Graduate Unemployed Nurses and Midwives Association of Ghana, including Abdul Sugri Rafiq, the Convener of the group who led this protest at the Ministry of Health. Some information available to us indicate that they have been sent to the Central Police station in Accra.

“We are, by this release, calling on the Ghana Police Service and the Minister in charge of National Security to release our members with immediate effect or face the wrath of the unemployed nurses across the country.

“Also, we are calling on our members to remain calm for more updates and further directives on this unfortunate incident. The arrest of our members is an illegal act and an affront to the rights and freedom of the innocent unemployed nurses.

“We, therefore, demand their immediate and unconditional release and an apology from the Ghana Police Service.”
